Asher Sizemore & Little Jimmie
The Radio Broadcasts
Broadcast includes Chawin' Chewin' Gum
During the depression era of the '30s and into the '40s, Asher Sizemore and his son, Little Jimmie, were very popular radio personalities, broadcasting from WHAS, Louisville Kentucky.
Little Jimmie was only five years old when they started singing together. Little Jimmie won the hearts of children and adults as he sang songs like Chawin' Chewin' Gum or when he signed the show off with As I Lay Me Down To Sleep.
Asher Sizemore & Little Jimmie were native's of Paintsville, Kentucky. They were regulars on WSM's Grand Ole Opry from 1933 to about 1943. Asher established a very successful mail-order service for their annual books of Hearth & Home Songs.
They also made transcription disc recordings that Asher syndicated to stations throughout the South and Midwest. These old radio broadcasts depict Asher and Little Jimmie singing from their hearts. You will also hear Asher and announcer James Alderman as they sell the above mentioned song books.
In 1966 Decca Records released an album of '30's radio transcriptions by Asher and Little Jimmie Sizemore. Titled, Mountain Ballads & Old Hymns: Asher Sizemore & Little Jimmie, Decca Records DL-74785 (1966).
Asher Sizemore began featuring his son on his depression era radio shows over Nashville's WSM Radio and as a duo they proceeded to become a phenomenon. Asher is very much a radio crooner, while Little Jimmie sounds more old timey.
