Playboy Records
Playboy Records was a record label in Los Angeles, California, and a unit of Playboy Enterprises.
The label was originally independently distributed and towards the end of its life, Columbia Records (CBS) took over distribution with a pact between Playboy and CBS. This was the result of Playboy ramping up their recording activity in Nashville, Tennessee.
The label's country division claimed only two executives; Eddie Kilroy (head of the Nashville office) and Nick Hunter (promotion director).
Country music artists recording for the label included Barbi Benton, Mack Vickery, Wynn Stewart, Mickey Gilley, Little David Wilkins, Sunday Sharpe, Layng Martine Jr. and Bobby Borchers.
Kilroy produced several recording sessions at the Fireside Studio, including the albums Ishabilly for Mack Vickery and First Class for Mickey Gilley and the single, Cheap Perfume and Candlelight for Bobby Borchers.
Aside from Wynn Stewart, whose career was on the decline and Mickey Gilley, who launched his career at Playboy Records, with his No. 1 single, Room Full of Roses, Playboy really didn't dig country music.
Sony Music's Legacy Recordings handles Playboy Records back catalog from the 1970's.
